The Carbon Monoxide Research for Africa (COR4A) in collaboration with Makerere University Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Bugema University Department of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is inviting applications from highly motivated full-time students for two partial research scholarship opportunities.

Study Focus

The study integrates environmental exposure assessment and social science research to understand the occupational, environmental, behavioral, and socio-economic dimensions of carbon monoxide exposure among vulnerable urban populations.

ONE (01) SLOT

Air Quality and Emissions Monitoring

Focus Area

Environmental monitoring, air pollution exposure assessment, occupational health, ventilation assessment, and environmental data analysis.

Eligibility

  • Be students enrolled in a Ugandan University
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized University
  • Demonstrate normal academic progress within their programme
  • Have a Bachelor's degree or about to complete in a similar subject area. Enrollment in a master's program is an added advantage.

  • Air Quality and Emissions Monitoring
  • Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Occupational Health, Public Health, Meteorology, or related disciplines.
ONE (01) SLOT

Social Science and Community Research

Focus Area

Community research, environmental justice, occupational livelihoods, behavioral risk assessment, lived experiences, and qualitative research related to carbon monoxide exposure among roadside businesses.

Eligibility

  • Be students enrolled in a Ugandan university
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized University
  • Demonstrate normal academic progress within their programme
  • Have a Bachelor's degree or about to complete in a similar subject area. Enrollment in a master's program is an added advantage.

Relevant Backgrounds

  • Social Science and Community Research
  • Sociology, Social Sciences, Anthropology, Development Studies, Public Health, Psychology, Environmental Health, or related disciplines.

Required Attributes

Strong interest in environmental health and air pollution research.
Commitment to academic excellence and scientific integrity.
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Good communication and report writing skills.
Willingness to conduct fieldwork in roadside business environments within Kampala suburbs.
Basic computer literacy and data management skills.

Support Provided

Field transport and refreshments
Access to specialized field monitoring equipment.
Practical training on operation and handling of environmental monitoring instruments.
Guided field supervision during data collection.
Supervised data entry, cleaning, and management.
Guided quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
Guided technical report writing.
Guided thesis development and writing support.
Training and mentorship in manuscript and scientific publication writing.
Opportunity to be included as co-authors on scientific publications arising from the study, subject to satisfactory contribution and compliance with publication ethics.
Mentorship within a multidisciplinary research environment.

* This is a six-month partial scholarship and does not provide tuition or full financial sponsorship.

What the Support Does NOT Cover

University tuition and functional fees.
Personal living expenses and accommodation.
Home to work/university transport and personal upkeep.
Laptop acquisition and personal study materials.
Any other costs outside the agreed research support framework.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to support themselves financially for aspects not covered by the opportunity.

Duties and Responsibilities

Participate actively in field data collection activities.
Attend research trainings and supervision sessions.
Support environmental monitoring and/or social science data collection activities depending on the scholarship track.
Participate in questionnaire development and piloting.
Support data cleaning, organization, and preliminary analysis.
Contribute to technical reports, thesis chapters, manuscripts, and presentations.
Maintain professionalism, research ethics, and confidentiality.
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary research teams.
Meet agreed research timelines and deliverables.
